Job Description: LIBRARY CLERK – PART TIME CLASS NO. 410 EEOC CATEGORY: Office and Clerical PAY GROUP: 1 FLSA: Nonexempt SUMMARY OF POSITION Provides assistance to the Librarian in daily library operations. Duties include assisting patrons, cataloging and processing new books, repairing damaged books, assisting with designing event flyers and social media posts, and assisting with event planning. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS 1. Reports to: Librarian 2. Directs: This is a non supervisory position. 3. Other: Has contact with library personnel, volunteers, city staff, and the general public. EXAMPLES OF WORK Essential Duties* Prepares new books and materials for shelving, including entering information into computer; Processes incoming and withdrawn materials; Provides reference services to library patrons, including assisting in the selection of pleasure reading, responding to reference questions, and assisting in locating specific books; Provides assistance to patrons with copying, faxing, and printing as well as assisting with computer related questions; Repairs and cleans damaged books, including laminating, replacing, or mending covers; Monitors due dates for withdrawn materials, assesses and collects fines for delinquent materials, and prepares and mails overdue and outstanding fine notices; Shelves library materials in correct order; Answers and refers incoming telephone calls, and assists callers as needed; Assists with special library programs, including summer reading program, story hour, and visits by school classes; Assists patrons with completing library application for cards, and enters information into computer; Collects and balances daily receipts for fines and fees for various services. Other Important Duties* Travels within the city to pick up and deliver mail and make weekly deposits; and Performs such other related duties as may be assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: municipal library operations, library reference systems, and the Dewey Decimal System. Skill/Ability to: work well with adults and children; accurately process materials and enter data into computer; pay great attention to detail; understand and follow instructions; apply correct oral and written English; operate standard office equipment, including printer and computer; perform simple mathematical calculations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co workers, organizations, schools, volunteers and the general public. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus at least one year of experience working in a public library; Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
