Job Description: NATURAL GAS TECHNICIAN CLASS NO. 760 EEOC CATEGORY: Service Maintenance PAY GROUP: 2 FLSA: Nonexempt SUMMARY OF POSITION Repairs and maintains city gas facilities in proper working condition. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS 1. Reports to: Utilities Supervisor/Sr. Gas Operator. 2. Directs: This is a non-supervisory position. 3. Other: Has contact with other city employees, the general public, plumbers, and contractors. EXAMPLES OF WORK Essential Duties* Repairs leaks in gas lines and connections; Performs connections and disconnects as instructed; Reads gas pressures on gas regulator stations; Performs regular inspections of the gas system and prepares reports; Assist with the annual gas survey; Operates pickup truck, backhoe, hand tools, technical poly fusion and safety equipment, ditch witch, frontend loader, or other equipment; Maintains all regulator stations; Performs gas tie-on on new and replacement services; Performs monthly odorization tests; Responses to gas leak complaints; Grades and repair gas leaks; Maintains on-call status as necessary. Other Important Duties* Assists other divisions of the utility department, including water and sewer main construction, reading meters, and inspecting manholes; Performs such other related duties as may be assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: methods, practices, and equipment used in the safe handling of natural gas; the safe operation of light and heavy equipment and of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of such motorized equipment. Skill/Ability to: repair and maintain city gas facilities, applying safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow instructions; perform simple mathematical calculations; prepare concise and accurate reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; and maintain appropriate necessary certifications, Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, and good driving record. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING High school Diploma, or its equivalent, plus Texas Railroad Commission training, Texas Gas Association training, and Texas Engineering Extension Service training, and at least two years of experience in gas utility operations; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED Appropriate Texas driver's license; and certification in poly welding.
