Position Summary

We are seeking a hardworking and safety-conscious Welder Helper to join a heavy manufacturing facility in Navasota, TX. In this entry-to-mid-level position, you will work closely with certified structural and pressure-containment welders, providing critical logistical, prep, and material handling support to keep production moving safely and efficiently.

This role is ideal for an individual with strong physical stamina, a foundational knowledge of metalwork, and an eagerness to learn professional industrial welding and fabrication processes from the ground up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Material & Surface Preparation: Prepare raw steel, pipe, and aluminum parts for welding by grinding, drilling, scraping, and cutting to exact dimensions using industrial hand and power tools.

  • Fit-Up & Tack Welding: Assist welders in the layout, positioning, alignment, and clamping of heavy industrial components. Perform basic tack-welding to secure pieces for final structural welding.

  • Material Handling & Rigging: Safely load, unload, and move heavy workpieces, raw steel, and finished components across the shop floor using overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts.

  • Equipment Maintenance & Set-Up: Set up welding machines, change out welding wire spools, replace shielding gas tanks, and maintain oxy-acetylene torch equipment under supervisor guidance.

  • Post-Weld Quality Clean-Up: Perform visual post-weld checks and clean finished welds by removing slag, spatter, and scale using wire brushes and grinders to ensure components meet strict quality standards.

  • Safety & Shop Housekeeping: Maintain a highly organized, clean, and hazard-free workstation in accordance with plant safety guidelines. Properly store specialized tools and safety gear.

  • PPE & Compliance: Continuously wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)—including welding shields, respirator masks, ear protection, and steel-toed boots—and immediately report any shop hazards.

Qualifications & Requirements

Experience & Skills:

  • Industrial Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a heavy manufacturing, industrial fabrication shop, or construction environment.

  • Tool Operation: Demonstrated experience safely operating manual and power tools—specifically heavy angle grinders, chop saws, and pneumatic tools.

  • Measurement & Blueprints: Comfort using basic arithmetic and standard tape measures to accurately verify material lengths and structural alignment. Ability to read basic mechanical drawings or structural blueprints is a plus.

  • Instruction & Communication: Strong ability to follow strict verbal and written technical instructions, safety protocols, and manufacturing routing steps.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and kneel continuously throughout a 12-hour shift in a non-climate-controlled shop environment.

  • Must be able to comfortably lift, pull, or push up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Experience (Bonus Points!):

  • Prior exposure to basic MIG, TIG, or Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) processes, or current enrollment in/completion of a vocational welding program.

  • Previous experience or active certifications operating overhead bridge cranes, hoists, and industrial forklifts.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
